Carolyn Mark & NQ Arbuckle - Officer Down

G
officer down

.........................C
Juliet Echo November

.............G
and the room falls apart but we'll pick it up

.............................C
and put it back together

Em..............................G
wake me up early and get dressed

........................C
and take me to breakfast

.........Em...............................G
and I don't even notice you coughing

.............C
into my coffee

........Em............G.............C
it's a shot in the dark but I don't think that

................Am
I've fallen further

Em.........G..........C
beautiful storms dancing like

...............Am
vodka December

........................C
like vodka December

drunk while you're asleep
I sneak around the bed like a burglar
and you don't even notice when
I knock over your glass of water
it's hard to be a good man listening
to the Drive-By Truckers
but you're so good to me it's weird
I think I'm happy
it's a shot in the dark but I don't think that
I've fallen further
beautiful storms dancing like
vodka December
like vodka December

pick me up from work
Juliet Echo November
how was you're day, I'm ok
what do you want for dinner
tired and kinda of crazy
what would you name the baby
but for everything we've got
and you mean everything to me
it's a shot in the dark but I don't think that
I've fallen further
beautiful storms dancing like
vodka December
like vodka December
like vodka December
like vodka December

Makes more sense that the line "like Vodka December" should be "like fog in December", dontcha think?

Hmmmmm. Dancing like fog in Decemmber...
OR Dancing like vodka December?!!?

I own this album and I was reading the insert, and while I thought it was "fog in december", its actually written "vodka december" in the lyrics given.

I love this song as well (hear it on CBC 3 often). Thanks for posting the chords and lyrics.

Personally I prefer the line 'Vodka December'. For me it describes a scene like one of those cold, crisp, clean winter nights with a black sky full of twinkling stars - and when you breath the inside of your nose freezes. A similar sensation as the first sip of a vodka martini.

But then I like more the obscure/less obvious. That allows me to create my own interpretation - and that's the 'magic' of 'art'.

LOVE this song
question though
any thoughts on what he means by
"Juliet echo November"

"Juliet echo November": I think the girl in the song is named 'Jen' and her name is spelled out like 'radio communication' like the term 'officer down' (which in this case I think means "I'm drunk and have fallen down").

In general I think the song describes a typical everyday love story - a misguided but basically good guy (who drinks a bit too much), and he sees the possibility of a future with a woman he loves.

But again good art is open to interpretation - and allows you to see your own reflection it.

I thought it was "like Parka December", which I quite liked. Oh well. Vodka will have to do.

Thanks for posting the lyrics. I absolutely love the song. And to add to what the pp said, is it possible that Officer Down stands for OD? Like he overdosed on JEN?
OD JEN...

It's a beautiful song regardless.

If Juliet Echo November is JEN
maybe Vodka December is VD.

so where else have we heard this song?

cbc and..?

Having dated a cop once, I can only think of this song as being about a relationship with one. Lots of cops metaphors, burgler, shot in the dark, and the NATO phonetics of JEN. Maybe that's too obvious, but it's what the song is about to me. Maybe the "OD" reference is better. Regardless, I like 'fog in December' and 'vodka December'. Both phrases give interesting google hits.

Vodka December is not VD
VD would be Victor Delta

From the first time I heard this song I thought it was about an officer down in its true sense - that this was a husband mourning his police officer wife who died in the line of duty. "officer down, Juliet Echo November, and the room falls apart but we'll pick it up and put it back together" -sounds like the intial shock of hearing she was killed in the line of duty. And that he's remembering their ordinary moments together - breakfast, picking him up form work, thinking about a baby, crawling into bed beside her after knocking over her water.

I dunno,

I dunno, there's lots of possible interpretations but that's the one that sprung out at me from the first listen onwards.

Here is my thought about why the song struck me so deeply. A fellow police officer, Sgt. Doug Tribbling of York Regional Police was shot and killed in the line of duty during the mid-80's. He had a girl-friend who was also an OPP officer and her name was JEN. The song reminds me of the two of them together and the tragedy of Doug's senseless killing - a great guy cut down by a scumbag.

I do think that Juliet Echo November IS the spelling of Jen. It's very obviously a love song...and since it's called "officer down" it's quite witty to use the spelling of the name!

Vodka December are the correct words. And they refer to actual vodka being drunk in December...mainly inspired by holiday parties. This was told by Neville during a CBC Radio 2 Drive interview.

I adore this song. NQ's got a way with words and Carolyn's voice just adds more magic to this song!!!

Wow, I thought it wasn't as much of a love story as it was a story of a man that is in a relationship but isn't quite sure of it. The part where he says "It's a shot in the dark but I don't think that I've fallen further" makes me think that he doesn't think that she's "the one", although he enjoys the small things and how good she is to him.

Fallen further "in love" me thinks.

Does anyone know where the piano music for this song could be found? I can't find it anywhere, just guitar parts.

Like many here, have listened to this song a lot. I thought the Officer Down part meant he fell in love with or fell hard for JEN but the OD'ed on JEN idea is an interesting interpretation of "Officer Down".

thanks all!
