Brent Best - Robert Cole

G.............Am
hey little man she said

C........................D
open your eyes lift your sleepy head

G..............Am...........................C...........D
you know tomorrow's your big day

here are your clothes she said
so I put them on and made the bed
and I went outside to play

when a sun so huge it shined
and it baked the blacktop underneath my toes
playing hopscotch on the lines

till she howled my name
and a shriek it came
with a swell of shame of sadness
I just froze
with a pain I simply can't define
yeah and she said

C...............D
I am your mother

..G.............................Am
I told your sister and baby brother

C.............D...........................G
your dog Jim and your best friend

C...........................D
that your name is Robert Cole

.......G...........................Am
and tomorrow you are nine years old

.......C.........................D....................G
but you, you will not walk this road again

now your son's heart is fair
so I took your words and I kept them there
but a young boy's mind is of a different gauge

my father's words returned to me
from some stormy evening with my mother on her knees
my life is mine he swore and raged

and he left her there upon the floor
I can hear him curse and slam the door
yeah and he found me squatting in the dirt

and he spoke to me of family
and sacrifices unforeseen
I'll the change the children worth the work
yeah and he said

please tell your mother
your oldest sister and baby brother
your dog Jim and your best friend
your name is Robert Cole
and tomorrow you are nine years old
but you, you will not walk this road again

I scanned the yard and house
secured no sign of mother's work-worn blouse
but for my heart the world was still

each foot a heavy load
the blacktop baked and burned under my toes
around the curve and below the hill

and this is the blacktop road
that I was not to walk till I was old
if Jeani saw me she would snitch

and these are the tire tracks
that will lead you down and round to where
there is a car off in the ditch

and I heard the fireman yell
this one is smashed and torn to hell
and he could not recognize the face

and I am my mother's son
but now it seems that I've gone off and become
the one to take my daddy's place

please tell your mother
my oldest sister and baby brother
my dog Jim and my best friend
my name is Robert Cole
and tomorrow I am nine years old
but I, I will not walk this road again

please tell your mother
my oldest sister and baby brother
my dog Jim and my best friend
my name is Robert Cole
and tomorrow I am nine years old
but I, I will not walk this road again

Slobberbone - Lazy Guy

........D......A
I'm a lazy guy

......D.............................................A
I'm amazed at the way some people try and try and try

....D..................................................A
To erect and then perfect some kind of proof that they're alive before they

E
die

.............................D.............A
Well not me, 'cause I'm a lazy guy

And I'm amazed at the way some people holler, fuss and run 'round
Like some chicken with their head cut off or a bullet from a gun
They should all sit back, relax and maybe try and have some fun
I'd help them try, but I'm a lazy guy

And I must defer a life of labor to someone who needs it more
I'd much prefer to be their neighbor, just the guy who lives next door
Sit out on the porch with my crap guitar and my mason jar of tea, and you know why
'Cause I'm a lazy guy

I'm a lazy guy
I'm amazed at the way some people try and try and try
To erect and then perfect some kind of proof that they're alive before they die
Well not me, 'cause I'm a lazy guy

And I'm amazed at the way you count my failings like some clerk
Like you're the saint in this relationship and me I'm just some jerk
'Cause it's love we got between us, and relationships take work so why don't you try?
'Cause I'm a lazy guy

I'm a lazy guy
I'm amazed at the way some people try and try and try
To erect and then perfect some kind of proof that they're alive before they die
Well not me, 'cause I'm a lazy guy

...............D............................................A
Yeah I'm amazed at the way the days just slip on by so fast

............C#m...............................G#
Like ten thousand go-carts racing down the mountain of the past

........A........................................F#
If I had a bead on what I need to make the moment last

......................G#
I just might try

.................B
I just might try

Yeah I'm amazed at the way the days just keep on slipping by
And I got plans and dreams and hopeful schemes, enough to make you cry
I'm just waiting for that single perfect point in time to give 'em all a try
And I'm a lazy guy

Slobberbone - Lumberlung

G......................................D
A breath of whiskey on my cotton shirt

Em.....................C
Turn on the fan, take off your skirt

G..........................................D
Lay here beside me on these sheets so stained

C....................................G
For a little while, but it ain't the same

Em.........................................C
And she brings me water and it always tastes so good

G..............................D
She brings me flowers from the woods

Em.................................................C
Stays here in this house with me when I know she'd rather leave

G......................D
Stays with me as I sleep

G......................................D
And she helps me nurse my lumberlung

.............C
But it's no longer fun

......D
For her

Once I dreamed we'd took a roadtrip, just me and her
Through the southern and midwest states
Turned north just south of Arkansas and we headed up
Towards the vast Great Lakes
And I thought I'd sleep through Texas, but I woke up in Illinois
And the car in the lane next to me was driven by a little boy
And he flashed a smile at me then he drove straight off the road
Smacked an overpass, I watched his car explode
And when she wakes me from my delirium
I know I'm no longer fun
For her

And she brings me water and it always tastes so good
She brings me flowers from the woods
Stays here in this house with me when I know she'd rather leave
Stays with me constantly
And she helps me nurse my lumberlung
But it's no longer fun
For her
