Justin Townes Earle - Who Am I To Say
G
Well now who am I to say?
C.....................................G
If all I know is what I heard
..............C
With the things some people say
............................G
You can never be to sure
.............Em
But who cares where you find comfort
C
I’m no one to deny
Am.......................................D
Anybody what they need to take them through a night
.............G
Because who am I to say
...........................C..............D...........G
What you should do behind close doors
Well now who am I to say?
I’ve been trouble almost all my life
I took pleasure in such things most wouldn’t entertain not at the darkest of times
So you take your pills and poison
Drink yourself to death
Give yourself away until you ain’t got nothing left
Because who am I to say that there’s anything wrong with that
C...................................Em
Yeah but why do you call at such hours every time
..............C..........C/b............Am................D
Saying I don’t need no money, I’ve just been thinking of you tonight
Oh, but who am I to say?
Maybe you had good intentions at heart
Maybe you took truer aim and it was me who missed my mark
But for every word of anger, left unexplained, for every time that I turned you away
Who am I to say that it wasn’t for the better, girl?
Who am I to say?

Justin Townes Earle - Black Eyed Suzy
Black Eyed Suzy
......Em
she works the corner
......C......................D
out on the block on which she was raised
......G
and I don't how but she
Em
finds some comfort
..........C
up amongst the rubble
............D
and the Queen Ann's Lace
......C.......................D
but nobody seemed to notice
......G.......G/F#....Em
her beauty wither away
....C
oh Black Eyed Suzy girl
D..................................G
how much more can you take
we were lovers back when we were younger but
we all know how that can go
it's like one day it's roses and the next it's over and
nobody asks cause ain't nobody wants to know
as soon as find a place far away
from these dirty heat
oh Black Eyed Suzy she's still losing ground to the heat
C
well now some make it into the wind
.....................................D..............G
they'll take a fly just to forget the pain
C
ah but Suzy she's dug in too deep
C
she knows she's been beat
...................D.......C.................D
but still she stands around and waits
D
ah but
as soon as the seasons change
it will bring the winter wind
Suzy she'll try to fight it
it won't be long
before the cold and rain
and the long November will decide it
what am I to do
ah what am I to say
I just walked from a distance as Suzy withers away

Justin Townes Earle - Yuma
C
Well he woke up that morning
and he called into work
Put on his daddy's old suit
with a second hand shirt
.....F
all untucked, shoes untied
C
The people all snickered as he walked by.
.........F
So he stopped in a bar,
...............................................C
bought a shot of Stevens and another.
......F
He bummed a cigarette
..............................................................C
and set talking to a stranger about the weather.
....................Am
And then he paid his bill and
....G..........................C
he stepped outside, fell down into the street.
F
He cursed, and he cried
C.......G.............................F...................G
as he climbed back up his feet again.
So up the road he found a payphone and called his mom.
He said, momma I think I'll be coming back home.
I been feeling so bad, and
tired of this city. Ain't been the same since I lost my pretty Angeline.
Momma I miss her so.
It's been over a year and there ain't nothing I fear so much as being alone.
And then he hung up the phone without saying good bye.
Stopped in a store and bought a postcard and signed it, Fair thee well, and sent it back home to Yuma.
C..C/B..Am
Am
Lookin back I'd say,
F..............................C
it wasn't so much the girl.
F...................C
As it was the booze and the dope
.............G
and the way he took the weight of the world
.............................Am
up upon his shoulders.
......................F
And when he washed the blue from his eyes,
..................C
as he grew colder.
....................F.......................G....................C
As through all those lonely nights there left alone.
C..C/B..Am..G
So he was just 23 when he stepped out on that ledge.
It was his weary heart that pushed him to the edge.
He was tired of living life, looking for love.
A weary heart just needs a little touch.
And is it too much to ask, he cried as he stepped into the wind.
He turned his back onto the world and he fell back to earth again.
So with the wind in his hair, and smile on his face,
he crashed through the hood of an Old's 98,
and he lay there dying on a cold winters day
all alone, all alone.

Chorus:
Am.......Dm...Em...........Am
take me home lone pine hill
I swear I see her in my dreams sometimes
Held up in the middle of the night
Shakin like a pistol in a young mans hand
There in the pale moonlight
Standin up the top of that lonely hill
Spared by the company mines
Is my blue eyed baby with her best dress on
In the shadow of a lonely pine
I'll be back before the war
When the company came
They still grew wild and free
Me and baby we'd hide in the hollars low
Away from the cruel suns heat
But then they knocked down the timber
And burned off the brush
To get to the riches below
And when they pulled out
They left a cold black ground
And one pine standing lone
So take me home...
Lone pine hill
I signed up back in '61
I'm an army of a genuine man
I've been from Mannasas to Mackonackey
All the way to Sailors Creek fighting
For my home land
After 4 years gone and all hope lost
And rich mens under seige
They were diggin out fire holes
And waitin in the rain
To shed and they bring us to their knees
So take me home...
Lone pine hill
There's a strange moon hangin' overhead tonight
And if the rain keeps comin then the creek's gunna rise
With the good lords grace
I'll make it outta this place
I'll be in her arms come the morning light I swear...
So god grant me speed and grant me forgiveness
And carry me on through the night
Take me through the hills and over your rivers
Away from this awful fight
Cause I ain't never known a man that's never owned another
Ain't never owned nothin of my own
And after 4 long years I just can't tell you
What the hell I've been fighting for...
So take me home...
Lone pine hill
Take me home...
Lone pine hill
Justin Townes Earle - Lonesome and You
G
if you don't want me like I want you
.......C
well come on honey why don't you
G................................................................D
give me some kind of clue as what I should do
well you keep acting like you love me
but all I want is for you to show me
how much you really care if you even do
C............................................G
so I don't know what I should do
.....................................D
seems like either way I lose
.........................G
between lonesome and you
now every time I, I try and kiss you
you turn your cheek and oh how I miss you
why do you have to be so cruel
I used to think that you were so
sweet and loving but now I know
just what me thinking can do
so I don't know what I should do
seems like either way I lose
between lonesome and you
C..............................G
between lonesome and you
.......D......................G
ain't where I want to be
.........C..........................G
but it seems I love you more
......A...................D
the less you love me
so I don't know what I should do
seems like either way I lose
between lonesome and you
so I don't know what I should do
seems like either way I lose
between lonesome and you

Justin Townes Earle - The Good Life
Well since you’ve left I’ve had no place to be
........D............................G
I’ll spend most everyday doing as I please
G..........................G7...............C................A7
I’ve got pockets full of money; hear a jingle when I walk
.............G..........D..........G
Yeah it’s a good life from now on
Now if I walk down the street everybody knows my name
They all step aside and let me go my way
They all smile and snicker and some won’t talk at all
Yeah it’s a good life from now on
.........C...................................G
Oh and all the fancy restaurants won’t let me wait inside
.......D...........................................G
They serve me out the backdoor and never ask for a dime
G...........................G7...............C.......................A7
So you tell me what I’m missing and I’ll tell you where you’re wrong
.............G..........D...........G
Yeah it’s a good life from now on
Well now I could go anywhere and live this way
I could catch a first class trip on a mountain bound train
Yeah ‘cause I’ve got nothing left here to keep me hanging on
Yeah it’s a good life from now on
Yeah it’s a good life for me from now on
